I’m really happy that Kohei Horikoshi has found success in WeeklyShonen Jump. His previous two series, Ōmagadoki Dōbutsuen and Barrage, both ended early and his career at Jump was on the cutting block. Now, this hit is fighting the likes of One Piece for most popular manga in Jump. The anime by BONES has also been amazing.
This week Seamus checks out a new yuri manga After Hours, dakazu checks out both the manga and live-action drama of Otoko Meshi, darfox gives a questionable synopsis of the Rurouni Kenshin anime as we discuss it’s re-serialization in Jump SQ, and we do a quick update on new Chi no Wadachi and BEASTARS chapters. Then we take a look at Cobra for Saikyo Selections! We examine the originality of Buichi Terasawa ’s design, see the influence of James Bond and Total Recall in the story and characters, and discuss the pop culture significance the series had on future anime, manga, and media all around the world!
Just finished the 6th and final volume of Mari Yamazaki’s manga adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s biography on Steve Jobs. When I started reading it I was baffled on why this existed but I actually really enjoyed it. Yamazaki’s art style is so perfect.
New manga by Takayuki Yamaguchi , who’s famous for violent works like Apocalypse Zero and Shigurui. This one feels right at home with his other works and focuses on heavy violence and nudity. Takayuki Yamaguchi is kinda like the R-rated version of Baki the Grappler’s Keisuke Itagaki.
Jiro Matsumoto’s crazy-ass sci-fi story about giant high school girl humanoids that pilots ride inside to fight wars on an alien planet. As pilots increase their hours inside the Assault Girls they being losing their minds to corruption and start believing that they really are a high school girl.
It ended up leading to a very divisive argument on our podcast but behind all the gore and perverted stuff there really is a unique and interesting story. Personally, I’d love to finish it.
Rereading some previous manga and started with this. We’ve discussed it on a previous podcast but the amount of detail into the life of an inmate at a Japanese prison is astounding. Fascinating manga and also adapted to a live action film.
Wonderfully quirky manga about Agetaro who finds a correlation between being a DJ and being a fried pork chop chef.
The art style is very unique and cartoony. Another successful manga launched on Jump’s online web-manga site Jump+. There was a great anime adaptation that came out last year as well.
On this episode our buddy Miki’s Stopwatch stops by to join us in discussing this season’s hot(mostly not) anime and older stuff as well: Welcome to the Ballroom, Magical Circle(Mahoujin Guru Guru), Made in Abyss, Restaurant to Another World(Isekai Shokudou), Haibane Renmei, Ashita no Joe, Snow White with the Red Hair(Akagami no Shirayuki-hime), Love and Lies(Koi to Uso), Gamers!, Kakeguri: Compulsive Gambler, My First Girlfriend is a Gal(Hajimete no Gal), Clean Freak! Aoyama-kun(Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun), and RIN-NE(Kyokai no Rinne)! Also, Miki praises BEASTARS & The Ancient Magus’ Bride, we talk about the money behind anime streaming services, we talk about finding a theater that will show obscure anime movies, we talk about the New York Review of Books reviewing Ichi-F, darfox notices a change in Shuzo Oshimi’s art style, dakazu loves a tale of imaginary girl training victims in Chuni no Danshi to Dairokkan, and we debate the appeal of dark, weird, interesting manga like Naraku no Hitsuji!!!
Food manga about Ryota, a university student, who ends up harboring Yakuza boss Ryuichi in his apartment, who ends up cooking delicious meals with leftovers.
The twist that a criminal is actually a good chef is entertaining and there’s a good amount of comedy with Ryota trying to hide the fact that he has criminals staying at his place. It’s based on a novel and there’s also a live-action TV show as well.
A D&D style fantasy world about a group of adventures eating monsters to sustain themselves on their quest to rescue a party member.
We’ve talked about it on an old podcast before. I’m glad this manga has gained some mainstream popularity and there are official releases coming out now from Yen Press.
