Shokuryou Jinrui Re: Starving Re:velation

The sequel to Starving Anonymous where human society now revolves around the honor of becoming food for the “divine beings”.

This is pretty great! There’s a real good tension in the first chapter where we follow our main character in high school. He’s afraid of dying and immediately shunned by his teachers and classmates for not chopping off his finger for the “divine beings”. This sequel makes me excited to read it because I want to know how we arrived here from the ending of Starving Anonymous. These good hooks are what I expect from Yuu Kuraishi‘s writing. The later reveal of the “divine beings” is where Kazu Inabe‘s horrific monster designs really shine. Inabe is a master of gore so this is definitely not for the faint of heart. Hopefully this will be a future English release from Kodansha.

Available to read online in Japanese on Comic Days.

Fort of Apocalypse

Fort of Apocalypse

A horror manga about a group of delinquents in a juvenile correction facility who have to survive a zombie apocalypse.

A decent horror series. There’s some tense storytelling and interesting characters from Yuu Kuraishi and really grotesque monster designs from Kazu Inabe. The same creative duo went on do make Starving Anonymous and Denjin N, both of which are decent horror manga.

Fort of Apocalypse is a little similar to I am a Hero in the sense that it starts with regular zombies and then they evolve into more monstrous designs. I think Inabe deserves a lot of praise for his “creepy monster pasta” drawing skills. I recommend this if you’re looking for some good horror art.

Available from Kodansha Comics.

Denjin N

Denjin N

A horror manga about a poor idol fanatic who becomes digitized and able to freely control all electric devices after suicide. He promises to get revenge on those who mistreated him and help his favorite idol become world famous.

This is the current series by the creative team behind Starving Anonymous and Fort of Apocalypse. Interesting enough there is also a draft credit to Kuu Tanaka, the artist behind The Vertical World.

As far as horror manga goes, Denjin N is very good. Our idol is horrified as rival idol groups and talent agencies fall to gruesome accidents caused by our digital stalker. The story even advances to a state where the digital stalker sheds his superego and his destructive id that forces all of Japan to worship the idol. While this doesn’t include the usual creative monster designs Kazu Inabe is known for, Yuu Kuraishi join him in creating a horrifying look at extreme stalkerism.

Currently serialized on Comic-Days.

Starving Anonymous

Starving Anonymous

I rather enjoyed Kazu Inabe’s artwork on Apocalypse no Toride and this new series really takes advantage of his talent creating disgusting creatures. A horror manga about escaping a facility crawling with monsters, I got hit with a few unexpected twists.

It’s available in English from Kodansha and I recommend checking it out.
