A manga about the last survivor of the ghost tribe, Kitaro, and his adventures dealing with Japanese yokai.
Shigeru Mizuki‘s representative work. Mizuki adapted the Hakaba Kitaro character created by Masami Ito and Keiyo Tatsumi from his days doing kamishibai street theater. This series helped popularize monsters and creatures from Japanese folklore. It has been adapted into numerous anime adaptations and is well known in popular culture today. The original manga by Mizuki is still interesting to read today, albeit simple in story as it was intended for children. Revisiting Shigeru Mizuki‘s work always makes me appreciate his art work, especially considering he comes from the generation of manga artists who drew everything themselves.
Kitaro is iconic and still worth reading today. Collections are available in English from Drawn & Quarterly.

A manga biography by Shigeru Mizuki about the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler.
Another power non-fiction work from Shigeru Mizuki. I was really impressed with Mizuki’s ability to seamlessly mix his cartoony characters with realistic backgrounds. There’s extreme attention to detail as Mizuki also recreated many famous photos of Hitler but through his own unique drawings. The subject matter is tough to read at times but this book handles these events with a serious tone that you’d expect from a history novel.

Finally got a chance to read the original Japanese version. It’s crazy to imagine this tale of Japanese soldiers being ordered to execute a suicide attack during the end of World War II was based on Shigeru Mizuki’s real life experiences.

Mizuki Shigeru’s last serialized autobiographical manga. He started this when he was 91 years old!!! A true legendary manga author, right up there with Osamu Tezuka and Shotarou Ishinomori.
