Tsuma to Boku no Shoukibo na Ikuji

Tsuma to Boku no Shoukibo na Ikuji

A biographical series by Shigeyuki Fukumitsu about raising his children.

I’m a big fan of Shigeyuki Fukumitsu‘s manga. He’s drawn multiple series centered around his wife but this new series is all about his kids. Fukumitsu’s negative and defeatist attitude leads to a lot of humorous disagreements with his wife about how to raise his sons. What I wasn’t expecting was Fukumitsu to be so open about the complications about possible deafness his eldest son went through after being born. I’m glad that his son is able to hear now thanks to hearing aids, as the series continues to cover the growth of the kids.

Available to read in Japanese on Comic Days.

Seikatsu

Seikatsu

A manga about  people who form a group to enact vigilante justice against wrongdoers in their city.

I’m a huge fan of Shigeyuki Fukumitsu and while he’s most known for his autobiographical work about his wife, I always enjoy most of his fictional work like this one.

I really liked how the story focuses on these individuals who feel the need to punish petty injustices like rude people talking loudly on the train. Their group eventually grows into a large organization that maintains the peace of the community but corruption ends up getting the original members ostracized. It’s a pretty common story line but Fukumitsu has a really unique way of drawing action scenes so that carried me through til the end of the book.

Also Fukumitsu must really like hammers as a weapon because this isn’t the first manga I’ve seen him use them in.

Tsuma ni Koisuru 66 no Houhou

Tsuma ni Koisuru 66 no Houhou

A collection of short stories about artist Shigeyuki Fukumitsu’s actually wife and family. Fukumitsu specializes in non-fiction and has done several series based on his wife. This manga is his current iteration.

When I read stories about how he admits to using meager tactics to appease his wife’s fiery temper it made me wonder if she reads the manga later and gets back at him. Of course, the next chapter was a story about this exact thing and it became it’s own little story.

Lots of self deprecating humor and the wife’s wild personality makes anything about Fukumitsu’s wife entertaining to read.

Chuni no Danshi to Dairokkan

Chuni no Danshi to Dairokkan

A story about a bullied 8th grade boy and his imaginary female friend, ‘Master’, who mentors him.

Shigeyuki Fukumitsu is known for his autobiographical diary stuff so reading a story-based fictional manga from him was refreshing. He’s relatively unknown in the West but I recommend reading any of his work because it’s all entertaining.
