Abara

Abara

A manga about humans fighting a losing battle against alien invaders intent on destroying the Earth.

We’ve discussed this on an older episode.

Another wonderful book by Tsutomu Nihei! Abara was made before Nihei focused on commercial manga so it still carries a lot of his distinct darker ink work from earlier in his career. I personally prefer this style that was founded in BLAME!. If you’re a fan of BLAME! more than Knights of Sidonia than I would recommend this to you. It maybe thematically the same “Dying Earth” genre that Nihei uses but it’s such a visually stunning read with some truly grotesque body horror.

Available in English from VIZ.

Biomega

Biomega

A manga about a synthetic human agent on a mission to track down a young girl who is immune to the deadly virus that transforms people into zombie-like drones.

We’ve discussed this on a previous episode.

As a fan of Tsutomu Nihei I should have read this much sooner. This series is extremely similar to BLAME!. The main character is basically Kyrii but they gave him a cool motorcycle and an even bigger gun. The story focuses on a dying Earth that’s about to be over run with horrible mutated creatures. The Earth get’s transmuted drastically midway through the story and it’s fantastically drawn by Nihei.

If you prefer BLAME! over Nihei’s later stuff like APOSIMZ then I think you’re really enjoy this book.

Available in English from VIZ.

Noise

Noise

A prequel to BLAME! that explains the origins of the city. The story follows a young detective as she investigates a cult who are trying to summon safeguards into base reality to cause chaos.

This one is going a bit divisive for fans of BLAME!. I personally like having an official explanation about the origins of the silicon life and the birth of the city but I can also see how this removes that mystery from BLAME!.

There’s also a bonus chapter of Tsutomu Nihei‘s one-shot prototype of BLAME! which is really interesting to see because it shows just how much Nihei expanded on both his art and story before his official debut.

Currently available from Kodansha Comics.
